Although we keep hearing about identity theft certain victims of the crime fall through the cracks. These victims are businesses. The identity of a business can be stolen just as easily as any another identity and business owners need to protect against it. Your business identity can make or break you so you need to protect it.
Protecting a business identity is in a lot of ways like protecting your personal identity but there are other issues you must address that don't come up in your personal identity. so here are a few tips on protecting your business identity.
1. Register your trademarks, logo and name. By doing so you may be able to legally prevent others from using them
2. Be aware of other businesses using a similar name. They maybe on the up and up but they could be using the similarity in names to lure away your customers.
3. Protect your tax ID number or other official business ID number. This is the business equivalent of a social security number.
4. Shred all unnecessary paperwork that has information identifying your business.
5. Know your billing dates, if your business is not receiving bills, there's a reason.
6. Investigate customer complaints from non-customers. If you are receiving complaints from people who are not your customers, find out why.
7. Teach your employees to protect the business identity. Employees can unknowingly give someone all the information they need to steal your business identity
