Ms. Oaks began her study of psychology at Edinboro University in Edinboro PA. There she studied the foundations and systems of psychology. Her undergraduate internship was performed at St. Vincent Health Center Partial Program, where she served as co-therapist/intern. In this role, she facilitated groups of adults in dual diagnosis, medication management and daily living and social skills. Shortly after earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Edinboro University, where she graduated on the Dean’s List, she began her career at Sarah Reed Children’s Center in Erie, PA. Here she served as a mental health technician. In this role, she worked directly with children diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and other mental health disorders. After careful consideration, Ms. Oaks decided to pursue a graduate degree in Psychology. She applied to and was immediately accepted into the Counseling Psychology program at Gannon University in Erie, PA.

While immersed in her graduated studies, Ms. Oaks accepted a Therapeutic Support Staff position at The Achievement Center in Erie, PA. In this role, Ms. Oaks provided therapeutic services to children diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorders. This was the beginning of a long professional relationship with the agency. It was also here that Ms. Oaks performed the first of her graduate internships in the Outpatient Department of the Child and Adolescent Unit. During this internship, Ms. Oaks participated in program development, direct individual counseling and family counseling. While developing her skills as a counselor and learning the science of psychology, Ms. Oaks declared a concentration in child and adolescent study and family dynamics.

The latter portion of Ms. Oaks’ graduate experience was spent in practicum at St. Vincent Health Center (Erie, PA) in the Adult Psychiatric Unit. It was here that Ms. Oaks was exposed to adult patients with chronic mental illness that required constant monitoring and medication management.
After much hard work and relentless dedication, Ms. Oaks earned a Master of Science degree in Counseling Psychology, with an ending grade point average of 3.65.
Ms. Oaks began her post-graduate career at The Achievement Center (Erie, PA) as Mobile Therapist and also at Stairways Behavioral Health (Erie, PA) in the same role. Ms. Oaks worked directly with children and adolescents and their families that were diagnosed with mental health disorders. Ms. Oaks served in this role for a period of four years. This position afforded her the unique opportunity to work with teachers and school personnel on the appropriate techniques necessary to effectively teach children specifically diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. Ms. Oaks has been sought after to speak at Health Fairs, Teacher In-Service Trainings and Parenting Seminars.

Ms. Oaks organized a Parenting Seminar for Greater Calvary Full Gospel Baptist Church (Erie, PA) where she presented her curriculum on “The Family Development Model…Make Positive Choices to Make Positive Change” that she saw a need for within the community.

Ms. Oaks has served as a Guest Lecturer of Psychology at Great Lakes Institute of Medical Technology (Erie, PA). She has also served as Instructor for the “Straight Ahead” program funded by the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (Erie, PA), this program was focused on the assimilation of male prison inmates back into society.

Ms. Oaks has a passion for helping children and adolescents reach their full potential regardless of diagnosis or social factors. Her dedication to community is evident in her volunteer and service endeavors, particularly with her work with the Junior League of Erie, where her main focus was on literacy and the public library system.

Shorty after relocation from PA to Charlotte, NC, Ms. Oaks continued her teaching career at Wingate University (Wingate, NC) in the position of Professor of Psychology. Ms. Oaks serves as Adjunct Professor for traditional students on Wingate’s main campus as well as for adult students on Wingate’s Metro campus in Matthews, NC.

Ms. Oaks is excited to participate in “The Incredible Years” program and is looking forward to presenting the curriculum that is proven to facilitate more effective communication and interaction between parents and their children as well as parents with other adults.

Ms. Oaks has been married to Mr. Anthony L. Oaks for almost 11 years. They have 3 beautiful, intelligent and talented children; Anthony, age 9, Tamia, age 7 and Tamar age 5. Ms. Oaks admits that of all of the positions that she has held, parenting is the most difficult and rewarding.

Katina will be joining us immediately after an engagement and intends to contribute in an attempt to provide the necessary content to provide a better out come for our members that can use the information and skills Katina will bring to out community.

I don't usually announce a member in this manner but this will be the very first family member to join any online interaction that I have been involved with. I hope every one welcome our newest member with open arms.
